"Killers" Review
by Showbizdata.com
Critics
have not reacted favorably to the Ashton Kutcher-Katherine
Heigl comedy Killers, with the L.A. Times
stating, "This is just an empty summer hodgepodge of
stale romantic comedy exchanges, witlessness and lackluster
action. "The film stars Kutcher and Heigl as a couple
that is thrown into adventure when it is revealed that Kutcher
is working as a spy. Chicago Tribune critic Michael
Phillips takes aim at the story's premise, finding it one of
the many trite aspects of the film, "Haven't we seen the
oh-my-gosh-my-shouse-is-secretly-as-assasin routine once too
often?" For many critics, however, the problem centers on
Heigl's characted, with Wesley Morris of Boston Globe
stating. "Just as I was beginning to hope that she'd find
a part that called for intelligence and sophistication and
backbone, she plays another uptight naif." In a
particularly negative review, Frank Scheck of The Hollywood
Reporter states, "The audience is the real
victim."
Bullock
Takes MTV Movie Awards
by
Showbizdata.com
Actress
Sandra Bullock received the MTV Generation Award at last
night's MTV Movie Awards, marking the first TV appearance of
the actress since the public breakup of her marriage. An
energetic Bullock assured the audience that her career is
far from over after receiving the award from Bradley Cooper,
Betty White and Scarlet Johansson, who the actress later
kissed. In addition to Bullock's acceptance, highlights
included Tom Cruise reprising his Les Grossman character
from Tropic Thunder. The Twilight saga emerged
as the major winner of the night with stars Robert Pattinson
winning best male performance, Kristen Stewart winning best
actress, Pattinson and Stewart picking up the best kiss
award, and the film earning the best movie award. Few are
surprised as these awards are determined by popular vote and
the Twilight films have a loyal fan base. The awards
show was hosted for the first time by Parks and
Recreation star Aziz Ansari.
'Shrek
4' Takes Third Weekend
by
Showbizdata.com
Shrek
Forever After has continued its stint on top of
the domestic box office for the third weekend in a row
with an estimated $25.3 million. Shrek was able
to beat out new release films Killers, Get
Him to the Greek, Splice, and Marmaduke,
though many in the industry are complaining about
rather tepid box office receipts all around. Coming in
second was the Russell Brand-Jonah Hill comedy Get
Him to the Greek at $17.4 million. Third was Killers,
which despite very negative reviews, pulled in $16.1
million. Prince of Persia came in fourth with
$13.9 million and Sex and the City 2 which took
in $12.7 million domestically.

“Inception"
is a mind-bending science fiction thriller from director Christopher Nolan.
The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a thief who enters the dreams of a victim
to steal information.
The latest Inception trailer features a
distinctive music track titled "Mind Heist," the track was composed,
orchestrated, recorded and mixed by Zack
Hemsey. The composer worked with Pusher
LLC, a new film trailer music agency which has also worked with artists
like DJ Shadow and The Crystal Method. The Inception ad music is the very
first theatrical trailer music credit for both agency Pusher and composer
Hemsey, which is fitting given the film's Inception title.
This is the music that was used and written
for the 3rd Inception Trailer.
The cue will be available for sale once the film comes out in mid-July. Subscribe
to the Zack Hemsey YouTube
channel, and a bulletin will be posted once the track is released. Listen

jointly.
While the next Bond may be delayed

Here is the latest trailer for 'The

released a trailer for George Nolfi's movie starring Matt Damon and

Nolfi, who is best known as a screenwriter who wrote Timeline, Ocean's
Twelve, The Sentinel and The Bourne Ultimatum.Movie
opens September 17, 2010. Originally Universal scheduled this movie
for July 30, but pushed it back to September release. Perhaps due to
possible conflict with another movie in the same genre 'Inception.'
There is a rough battle ahead. The trailer music used is from Audiomachine
"Breath and
Life", and "Surface of the Sun" from John Murphy's
"Sunshine"
Soundtrack. Enjoy...

Reviews
for sci-fi flick Splice have been strong
though far from universally positive with John
DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter stating,
"Genre-savvy monster movie approaches
Midnight Movie zone without abandoning the
mainstream." The film stars Adrien Brody and
Sarah Polley as two scientists that create a
hybrid human creature with destructive results.
Positive reviews often focus on Splice's
well-done effects, with DeFore commenting,
"The effects work is quite strong -- no
surprise for a fright-flick with Guillermo Del
Toro as an exec producer -- as is the moody
score." Though few reviews are stellar, many
reviewers, including Justin Chang in Variety,
find the movie engaging and suitably complex,
"Benefiting significantly from the casting of
Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as geneticists torn
between experimental ethics and love for the
mercurial monster they've created, director
Vincenzo Natali's outlandish sci-fier sustains a
grotesque and funny fascination throughout its
slightly protracted runtime." After
acknowledging the film's flaws, critic Roger Ebert
notes, "All the same, its well done,
and intriguing."
Critics
have reacted favorably to the Judd Apatow-produced
comedy Get Him to the Greek, starring
Russell Brand and Jonah Hill. Also featuring Sean
"P. Diddy" Combs, the film revolves
around a music intern who must escort an unruly
musician from London to Los Angeles within three
days. Many positive reviews have focused on the
actors, including Brian Lowry of Variety,
"Barring a few lapses, the gags fly by in
rapid-fire fashion, and enough of them connect --
thanks in part to the amusing mix of Hill's
hang-dog demeanor with Brand's lanky, relentless
hedonism." Echoing this idea is Robert
Wilonsky of Village Voice, "Get Him
to the Greek, is a mess, but an amiable and
occasionally uproarious one due mostly to Russell
Brand's reprising of his role as Aldous
Snow." However, there are dissenters such as
Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter
who states, "A giddy Diddy turn aside, this
wildly uneven comedy doesn't travel very
far."
Critics
have been uneven in their reviews of Prince of
Persia: The Sands of Time, either praising the
film's fun-factor or critiquing its lack of depth
with Leslie Felperin in Variety stating,
"Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
is silky to the touch, but slips from the mind all
too easily." The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal
as a deposed prince who seeks to protect a dagger
that controls time in ancient Persia. Some critics
look to director Mike Newell as simply being out
of his field when working on the movie, with The
New Yorker's David Denby stating, "Mike
Newell has made solid moviesFour
Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brascobut
what he does here feels more like traffic
management than like direction." Embodying
the majority sentiments is The Hollywood
Reporter's Ray Bennett, "...the film has
dash and flourish with adequate performances and
expert effects that keep a far-fetched tale
buoyant without leaving any lasting
impression."
Critics
have been harsh when reviewing Sex and the City
2, with many dismissing the film as largely
meaningless and New York Observer's Rex
Reed commenting, "It is to movies what fried
dough is to nutrition." The latest film has
Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda traveling
to Abu Dhabi on a luxurious vacation as the four
question marriage and parenthood. However, many
critics have called the film superficial, with
Roger Ebert stating, "The characters of Sex
and the City 2 are flyweight bubbleheads
living in a world which rarely requires three
sentences in a row. Their defining quality is
consuming things." Others have taken aim at
the movie's depiction of Muslims, with Claudia
Puig of USA Today stating, "An insult
to the memory of the cleverly written show and its
celebration of friendship, it's [the movie] a slap
in the face for the four gal pals (often
photographed at unflattering angles) and an
affront to Muslims." For most, it simply does
not live up to its predecessors, with Puig
lamenting, "Fans of the HBO series would be
wise to pivot on their Manolo Blahniks and steer
clear of the mortifying mess that is Sex and
the City 2."
MacGruber,
a comedy based off a recurring SNL skit,
has sharply divided critics with Lisa Schwarzbaum
of Entertainment Weekly calling the movie,
"a disposable action-comedy primarily geared
to young men and the 11-year-old boys who will
want to sneak into the R-rated screening."
Will Forte stars in the film as the overly
confident MacGruber who must go after a villain
after he has stolen nuclear weapons. Many critics,
like The Hollywood Reporter's John DeFore,
give the film weak praise, "Utterly
disposable but diverting, MacGruber manages
to spin feature-length product out of an idea that
few would try expanding beyond a Saturday Night
Live skit." Others like Kyle Smith in the
New York Post, see the film largely as a
failure, "There's a reason you've never seen
the words "Will Forte" topping the
billing of a major motion picture. After the
throbbing flameball of unfunny that is MacGruber,
you never will again."
The
fourth installment of the Shrek franchise, Shrek
Forever After, has received mediocre reviews
from critics. The plot follows a version of the It's
a Wonderful Life storyline, with
Rumpelstiltskin throwing Shrek into an alternate
universe in which Shrek never existed. Many
reviewers focus on the film's inability to live up
to its predecessors with The Hollywood Reporter's
Frank Scheck commenting, "This fourth
installment in the popular animated franchise
demonstrates it may finally be time to let Shrek
and Fiona live happily ever after." For many
critics, while enjoyable, the film seems to exude
a lack of effort, with Entertainment Weekly's
Lisa Schwarzbaum noting, "There's a soft,
middle-aged complacency to the well-oiled
mechanics of Shrek Forever After..."
Many critics like Village Voice's Ernest
Hardy are quick to note that the film is very
similar to its predecessors, though hardly in a
flattering way, "it [the film] largely
retreads formula: ironic use of pop standards,
musical numbers with contemporary choreography
played for maximum laughs, risqu
one-liners." However, Shrek Forever After
does have its supporters, including Pete Hammond
of Box Office Magazine, "If Shrek
Forever After is to really be the ending for
this terrific franchise, it's definitely a happy
one."
Reviews
for the indie film Holy Rollers, a
fact-based movie about young Hasidic Jews who
become drug runners, have largely been luke warm.
Most negative reviews have focused on the movie's
adherence to generic conventions, with Variety's
Justin Chang noting, "Holy Rollers
sends its protag along a fairly routine
crime-and-punishment arc..." Andrew Schenker
of Village Voice has similar feelings,
"Holy Rollers is too beholden to its
predictable pattern of rise, fall, and partial
redemption." For most reviewers, the film
falls short of its potential with Chang noting
"...director Kevin Asch's first feature is
intelligent, respectable yet curiously muted in
tone and impact, never fully catching the viewer
up in either its crime saga or its account of
individual rebellion within an insular religious
community." However, most critics had
favorable opinions of lead actor Jesse Eisenberg
with Rex Reed of The New York Observer
stating, "part of the film's ability to hold
attention must be credited to the guileless
sincerity of Jesse Eisenberg's performance."
Reviews
have been far from positive for the romantic
comedy Just Wright. Starring Queen Latifah
and hip hop artist Common, the movie centers
around a physical therapist who becomes involved
with an NBA star. However, reviewers have largely
found the film predictable with The Hollywood
Reporter's Michael Rechtshaffen noting,
"There's nothing in the strictly
by-the-numbers plotting, ho-hum pacing or stock
characterizations that would allow it to ever
truly come to life." In a similar vein is Variety's
Andrew Barker who comments, "Conventional in
every way save for the coupling at its center, Just
Wright largely succeeds as a handsomely
mounted showcase for Queen Latifah, as well as
some well-shot basketball footage, even if its
guilelessly upright characters can often steer it
toward blandness."Still voicing this idea but
in a less damaging way is Entertainment Weekly's
Lisa Schwarzbaum who notes, "The movie is a
rigged game of clichs and platitudes, but
fans will be pleased by additional proof that
Latifah is a lovable Queen but not a pampered
princess."
Letters
to Juliet has not had an easy time with movie
critics, with Rex Reed of The New York Observer
stating the film is "maddeningly predictable
enough to keep you checking your watch." The
largest complaints have focused on the use of
actors Vanessa Redgrave and Gael Garcia Bernal
with Reed complaining, "More shocking is the
fact that the usual charms of Mexican heartthrob
Gael Garca Bernal at last appear utterly
resistible." Positive reviews have mainly
centered on the film's use of scenery but for many
like John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter,
this is far from enough to carry the movie,
"Beautiful scenery and a cute premise can't
camouflage a stale plot in bland romance."
Summarizing the majority opinion is DeFore who
calls Letters a "bland, predictable
picture, whose sole assets are a cute premise, the
Italian countryside and the dignity Vanessa
Redgrave brings to a part that, on the page, is
quite beneath her."
There
has been a great deal of attention surrounding
Ridley Scott's Robin Hood, a film that
opened the Cannes Film Festival Wednesday and
comes to U.S. theatres Friday. Reviews for the
film, however, have been mixed. The movie stars
Russell Crowe in the titular role in what many
describe as a sort of prequel to traditional Robin
Hood tales. Most of the criticism of the film
centers around the Alien filmmaker's
direction with The Village Voice's Karina
Longworth lamenting the fact that "The
directorial choices are, for the most part, so
lazy, the blockbuster engineering so blatant, that
Robin Hood often falls into
self-parody." Echoing this idea is The
Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt who
comments, "Its European history is so
ludicrously mangled that one almost suspects Mel
Brooks and Monty Python's Flying Circus
lent a hand." Slightly more positive is Variety's
Justin Chang who states the film "brings
abundant political-historical dimensions to its
epic canvas," and Pete Hammond of Boxoffice
Magazine who calls the cast
"superb." However, overall reviews have
been mediocre for the latest incarnation of the
popular legend.
